Charter bases

Sardinia's charter fleet clusters on the northeast coast, with bases at Olbia, Portisco and Cannigione — all within easy reach of the island's headline cruising area, the Maddalena Archipelago. Olbia has the main airport, making logistics simple. These are well-equipped marinas with fuel, water and provisioning.

La Maddalena Archipelago

The La Maddalena Archipelago National Park is the reason most people charter in Sardinia — a cluster of granite islands and islets with some of the Mediterranean's clearest water and finest beaches.

The Costa Smeralda

Just south lies the glamorous Costa Smeralda, with Porto Cervo at its heart — one of the Mediterranean's most exclusive (and expensive) marinas, a hub for superyachts and celebrity-watching. Beautiful, but the anchorages of the Maddalena offer a wilder, more natural and far cheaper experience.

Practicalities

The La Maddalena park charges a daily fee ($16–32) and restricts anchoring in sensitive areas to protect the seabed. A recognised sailing licence is required for bareboat charter. Porto Cervo berths are premium; anchoring in the archipelago is far cheaper. Italy's small port taxes apply in commercial harbours.
