Month-by-Month Guide

December - April: Prime Season

This is when the Bahamas is at its finest. The northeast trades blow consistently, pushing you south and east through the Exumas chain or the Abacos cays. Seas are flat, visibility is exceptional, and anchorages are filled with an international cruising fleet. March is the busiest month - Georgetown, Exumas hosts hundreds of boats for the annual Cruising Regatta.

June - November: Hurricane Season

Statistically, the Bahamas is hit by a named storm roughly once every three years. Most experienced cruisers either leave for New England, return to Florida, or find a well-protected hurricane hole. The Abacos were devastated by Hurricane Dorian in 2019 but have largely rebuilt. Always maintain close watch on tropical weather if sailing during shoulder months.

Key Sailing Areas

The Exumas: 365 cays stretching 150 miles southeast of Nassau. The Exuma Sound offers brilliant trade wind sailing. Staniel Cay and the famous swimming pigs at Big Major Spot are highlights.

The Abacos: The protected Sea of Abaco between Great Abaco Island and the outer cays creates a near-perfect 120-mile sailing ground. Marsh Harbour is the charter hub.

Charter Costs

A 44ft catamaran in peak season (January-March) costs $5,500-$9,000/week bareboat from Marsh Harbour or Nassau. Shoulder season (November, April-May) runs $3,800-$6,000/week. Add the Bahamas cruising permit ($150-$300 depending on vessel size).

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I avoid sailing the Bahamas?

June through October is hurricane season. While the Bahamas is not hit every year, the risk is real enough that most charter companies reduce or stop operations.

Do I need a cruising permit for the Bahamas?

Yes. All foreign vessels must obtain a Bahamas cruising permit on arrival at an official port of entry. It costs $150-$300 depending on vessel size.

How far is it from Florida to the Bahamas?

The crossing from Fort Lauderdale or Miami to Bimini is about 50 nautical miles. Always cross the Gulf Stream with wind from the south or southeast to avoid dangerous breaking seas.
