Overview

The Exumas itinerary runs southeast from Nassau through the Exuma Cays chain to George Town (Great Exuma). It's a one-way charter — fly into Nassau, pick up the boat, and fly home from George Town. Note: a shallow-draft catamaran is strongly recommended; many Exuma anchorages are 4–7 feet deep, beyond the reach of deep-keel monohulls.

Day by day

Day 1 — Nassau to Allan's Cay (45nm): The longest passage of the trip — leave early to arrive in the afternoon. Allan's Cay has the famous iguanas that swim out to charter boats. Day 2 — Allan's Cay to Exuma Park (15nm): Enter the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park (no fishing, anchoring only). The snorkeling at Shroud Cay's creek is extraordinary — a tidal river through the mangroves. Day 3 — Park to Staniel Cay (15nm): The social hub of the Exumas. Thunderball Grotto (James Bond film location), the famous swimming pigs at Big Major's Spot, and Happy People Marina's bar. Day 4 — Staniel Cay to Compass Cay (8nm): Short hop to Compass Cay where nurse sharks (harmless) swim up to the dock to be petted. Day 5 — Compass Cay to Farmer's Cay (15nm): Quiet, unhurried day through the southern cays. Day 6 — Farmer's Cay to George Town (25nm): Arrive at Elizabeth Harbour, George Town — one of the Caribbean's largest natural harbours. Day 7: Return the boat; fly from Exuma airport.

Key anchorages

Warderick Wells (Exuma Park headquarters) — the most spectacular anchorage in the Bahamas. Staniel Cay — well-protected and sociable. Big Major's Spot — the swimming pigs live here. Cambridge Cay — best snorkeling in the Park.

Provisioning & marinas

Provision fully in Nassau before departure — island shops in the Exumas are very limited and expensive. Staniel Cay Yacht Club has diesel and basic provisions. George Town has a good supermarket. Budget $28–$55/night for Exuma Park moorings ($26/night, must be pre-booked).

Frequently asked questions

Is a catamaran required for the Exumas?
Not strictly required, but strongly recommended. Many anchorages are 4–7 feet deep. A catamaran with 3–4ft draft accesses spots a 6ft-keel monohull cannot. Check the draft of your charter boat before booking.
What are the swimming pigs?
A colony of feral pigs on Big Major's Spot island that swim out to greet visiting boats. They've become the most photographed attraction in the Bahamas. Anchor off and dinghy in — the pigs meet you in the water.
Do I need a Bahamas cruising permit?
Yes — the BEPAS (Bahamas Electronic Pre-Arrival System) permit costs $300 for vessels under 35ft. Process it online before departure from Nassau.
