Overview

The Sardinia circuit starts and ends in Portisco (near Porto Cervo) on the northeast coast, covering the Costa Smeralda, the Maddalena Archipelago, and a day-crossing to Bonifacio (Corsica) before returning south. Allow 6 hours per day of sailing maximum — the anchorages demand time to appreciate.

Day by day

Day 1 — Portisco to Capriccioli (15nm): An easy first afternoon's sail south along the Costa Smeralda. Anchor in Capriccioli bay — one of the most beautiful in Sardinia. Day 2 — Capriccioli to Palau (20nm): North through the Costa Smeralda, past Porto Cervo (stop for lunch if desired), to Palau — the gateway to the Maddalena Archipelago. Day 3 — Maddalena Archipelago: Explore Spargi, Santa Maria, and Razzoli islands within the national park. Anchor in Cala Corsara (Spargi) for the best swimming. Day 4 — Crossing to Bonifacio, Corsica (20nm): The Strait of Bonifacio crossing — time your departure for early morning in settled conditions. Arrive in Bonifacio's spectacular cliff-top harbour for lunch and an afternoon exploring the old town. Day 5 — Bonifacio to Porto Pollo (25nm): Return across the strait to Sardinia, sailing east along the northern coast to the kite-surfing village of Porto Pollo. Day 6 — Porto Pollo to Portisco (25nm): Southbound along the Costa Smeralda, stopping at Liscia Ruja beach. Day 7: Return the boat.

Key anchorages

Cala Corsara (Spargi) — the finest anchorage in the Maddalena park. Cala di Trana (Santa Maria) — sheltered, beautiful, rarely crowded. Bonifacio harbour (Corsica) — book a berth in advance in July/August. Capriccioli bay — arrive by 1300 to secure a spot.

Provisioning & marinas

Provision fully at Portisco before departure. Porto Cervo marina is excellent for top-ups but very expensive. Palau has a good supermarket. Budget $33–$110/night for marina fees; Maddalena national park anchorages charge $17–$28/day. Bonifacio marina: approximately $88–$132/night in peak season.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Strait of Bonifacio difficult to cross?
It requires careful timing — wind-against-tide conditions create steep seas. Cross in the morning in settled weather. The passage itself takes 1.5–2 hours.
Is the Maddalena park difficult to navigate?
The charts are good but the granite coastline is unforgiving. Use Navionics charts, post a bow watch, and anchor well clear of rocks.
Can I include the Aeolian Islands on a Sardinia charter?
The Aeolians (north of Sicily) are too far from Sardinia for a week charter — this is a 2-week circuit. A Sardinia circuit works as a standalone week perfectly.
