Mooring fields

The BVI has an excellent mooring field system — over 400 moorings throughout the islands, maintained by the BVI Moorings Programme. Cost: $25–$35/night. Pick up the ball, hang your payment slip, and a patrol boat collects in the morning. The busiest mooring fields (The Bight, White Bay) should be approached before 1500 in peak season to guarantee a ball.

Costs

BVI marina costs are broadly comparable with US east coast marinas — higher than the Mediterranean but reflecting the quality of facilities:

Frequently asked questions

Do BVI marinas need advance booking?
Peak season (December–March) — yes. Road Town marinas can be booked through charter companies. The Bitter End and Soper's Hole are worth booking directly 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season.
What is the BVI Cruising Permit?
The BVI Cruising Permit ($75+ depending on vessel size) is required for all visiting vessels. Purchase online through VISAR (Virgin Islands Search and Rescue) before arrival. Clear customs at West End or Road Town.
Can I anchor for free in the BVI?
Yes — anchoring is free outside designated mooring fields. Many anchorages have mooring balls and anchoring is prohibited to protect coral — always check the chart.
