Overview

Space is limited aboard a charter yacht — each cabin typically has one large locker and minimal shelf space. The golden rule: bring a soft holdall (not a rigid suitcase — it stores flat in a locker), and pack for conditions you'll actually encounter.

Clothing

Deck shoes (non-slip, white or non-marking sole) are essential and yacht-only. Bring a waterproof jacket even in summer. A fleece or mid-layer for evenings. Light, quick-dry shorts and shirts for days. Smart-casual clothes for harbour restaurants.

Safety & sun

High-SPF sunscreen in quantity. Polarised sunglasses. A hat with a brim. Seasickness tablets — take them before you feel ill; they're largely ineffective once nausea sets in. The best prophylactic is a skin patch (Scopolamine) applied 4+ hours before departure.

Electronics

A waterproof phone case is essential. A portable power bank. A tablet with Navionics installed is a valuable backup to the chart plotter.

What not to bring

Hard suitcases. High heels. Aerosol cans. Heavy books — download them instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire sailing gear at the base?
Some companies offer foul-weather gear hire. Quality is inconsistent — if you sail regularly, buying your own is worthwhile.
How much luggage can I bring?
Most companies recommend a maximum of one 60-litre soft bag per person.
Do I need my own lifejacket?
Charter yachts supply lifejackets. A personal EPIRB or PLB is worth considering for offshore passages.
