Charter bases
Almost all Whitsundays charters start at Airlie Beach on the Queensland mainland, home to the region's main bareboat operators, or nearby at Shute Harbour. Hamilton Island also has a marina and airport, useful as an alternative gateway. Airlie Beach is the last major provisioning point, so stock up thoroughly before setting off into the islands.
Anchorages
The 74 Whitsunday Islands offer a wealth of sheltered anchorages, most free or low-cost.
| Location | Highlight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Whitehaven Beach | 7km of silica sand | The iconic stop; day + overnight moorings |
| Hook Island | Fringing reef snorkelling | Sheltered northern bays |
| Nara Inlet, Hook Is. | Aboriginal rock art, calm | Deep protected inlet |
| Hamilton Island | Resort, marina, dining | Go ashore for a night off the boat |
| Border Island | Cateran Bay snorkelling | Beautiful reef anchorage |
Whitehaven Beach
Whitehaven Beach — seven kilometres of pure white silica sand, ranked among the world's best — is the centrepiece of any Whitsundays charter. The swirling sands of Hill Inlet at its northern end, where white sand and turquoise water blend, is the region's signature view. Moorings and day-anchoring let you enjoy it before the day-trip crowds and after they leave.
Practicalities
Sailing within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park carries modest fees, usually bundled by your operator. Most companies run a compulsory briefing before departure and a daily radio sched — a Whitsundays hallmark that makes it unusually beginner-friendly. Provision at Airlie Beach; the islands are uninhabited or resort-only. Many anchorages have free public moorings.
