Overview
The Whitsundays' sailing season is shaped by three factors: the SE trade winds (best May–October), box jellyfish stinger season (November–May, making swimming unpleasant without a stinger suit), and cyclone risk (November–April). These three factors converge to make June through August the optimal sailing window — ideal trade winds, clear of stinger season, and minimal cyclone risk.
Month by month
May — Season opening. SE trade winds establishing. Stinger season fading (still possible, use suits). Temperatures pleasant (22–26°C). Good value — prices 20% below peak.
June — Excellent. SE trades 15–20 knots. No stingers. Temperatures ideal (20–25°C). Water 23°C. Anchorages manageable. Best month for first-time Whitsunday visitors.
July — Peak season and best conditions. SE trades consistent 18–22 knots. Water clarity at its best. Whitehaven Beach busy with day trippers — arrive before 0900. Coldest water (21°C) but still very pleasant.
August — Same excellent conditions as July. Spring school holidays bring crowd spikes in the second half.
September — Very good. Winds beginning to moderate. Water warming (23°C). Crowds easing after August school holidays.
October — Good but transitional. SE trades becoming variable. Water 25°C. Humidity rising. Stingers starting to reappear in some areas.

Stinger season
Box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) are present in Whitsunday waters approximately November through May. Their sting is extremely dangerous. During stinger season, swimming requires a full-length stinger suit — available at all marinas. From June through October, swimming is completely safe and no protection is needed. This is one of the most compelling reasons to sail the Whitsundays in the June–October window.
Cyclone risk
The official cyclone season for Queensland is November through April. The Whitsundays experience cyclones approximately once every 5–7 years on average (most recently Cyclone Debbie in 2017, which caused significant damage). Charter companies operate outside the cyclone season (May–October) as standard. Do not charter in the Whitsundays November–April.
Trade winds
The SE trade winds are the Whitsundays' primary sailing wind — steady, reliable, and providing excellent downwind sailing toward the southern islands. Typical: 15–20 knots from the SE, building through the day and easing in the evening. The islands provide shelter from the dominant SE swell, making anchorages calm despite the wind.
