Belize sailing season at a glance
Belize's charter season runs November through April, tracking the dry season. Steady easterly trade winds of 15–20 knots, warm days, low rainfall and calm reef-protected water make this the window nearly everyone sails. The green (rainy) season from June to November brings humidity, afternoon downpours, and the Atlantic hurricane risk that peaks in August and September, when most charter operations pause.
| Month | Conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Nov–Dec | Dry season begins, trades fill in, warm | Excellent — season opens, book ahead for holidays |
| Jan–Feb | Peak dry season, steady 15–20kt NE–E trades | Best of the year — settled, breezy, comfortable |
| Mar–Apr | Warm, dry, reliable wind | Excellent — arguably the sweet spot, slightly warmer |
| May | Transition, heat and humidity building | Fair — shoulder, still sailable early |
| Jun–Nov | Green season, humid, hurricane risk Aug–Sep | Avoid — most charter fleets pause |
Weather & wind through the season
Belize has a subtropical climate with year-round temperatures averaging around 27°C (80°F). During the dry-season charter window, the trade winds blow reliably from the northeast to east at 15–20 knots — enough for genuinely good sailing, while the barrier reef keeps the water inside the lagoon flat and comfortable. Passages between cayes are short, so even on breezier days you're rarely exposed for long.
The peak holiday weeks around Christmas and New Year book out earliest and command the highest rates. For the best combination of price, weather and availability, the January-to-April stretch is hard to beat.
Hurricane season
Belize sits within the Atlantic hurricane belt, and the June–November wet season carries a real if modest risk, concentrated in August and September. Charter companies scale back or close during this period, and travel insurance with named-storm cover is wise for any trip booked at the season's edges. In practice, sticking to the November–April window sidesteps nearly all of this.
