Belize Marinas & Anchorages: Where to Berth and Moor

Belize runs on cayes and anchorages more than marinas — here's the Placencia base, the best overnight stops, and the practicalities.

Updated August 2026 Placencia base

Placencia & Laru Beya Marina

Placencia, on Belize's southern coast, is the heart of the country's charter scene. Laru Beya Marina is the main bareboat base — home to The Moorings and Sunsail — set at a resort on the Placencia Peninsula with fuel, water, provisioning support and a relaxed pre-charter atmosphere. The base is open daily, and most crews spend a night here at the start and end of the trip. Several other marinas and docks sit nearby in the Placencia lagoon, including Roberts Grove and Chabil Mar.

Cayes & anchorages

Like the Grenadines, Belize runs far more on anchorages than marina berths — the appeal is anchoring off tiny, near-deserted cayes rather than tying up in town. Popular overnight stops in the southern grounds include South Water Caye, Tobacco Caye, Ranguana Caye, Coco Plum, and Wippari Caye, most with little more than a beach bar and a stretch of sand.

The northern grounds

Belize's second cluster of sailing is up north around Ambergris Caye and San Pedro, near famous snorkelling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley. Because of the distance from Placencia, most one-week charters stay in one region; linking north and south is a two-week undertaking. Provisioning is best done thoroughly in Placencia (or Belize City) before departure, as the cayes have very limited supplies.

Practicalities

Every bareboat skipper needs a Temporary Certificate of Competency from the Belize Port Authority, arranged in advance through your charter company. The three offshore atolls generally require a local skipper aboard. Prepaying fuel at the Placencia base is common and saves time on return. Navigation is by eye through shallow "skinny water," so an unhurried pace and good light are your best tools.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the main charter base in Belize?
Laru Beya Marina in Placencia, on the southern coast, is the primary bareboat base, home to The Moorings and Sunsail. It offers fuel, water and provisioning support.
Are there many marinas in Belize?
Few — Belize sailing runs mostly on anchorages off small cayes rather than marina berths. Placencia has the main marina facilities; elsewhere you anchor off the islands.
Can I sail to the atolls?
Turneffe, Lighthouse Reef and Glover's Reef are spectacular but lie in open water outside the barrier reef, so charter companies generally require a local skipper aboard to sail to them.
